In conjunction with Hexagon Center’s Shopping Security Awareness Month, it is necessary for us to talk about the messages we are getting in our emails and phones. It’s an easy decision we have been talking about since last week.

Because Hexagon Center is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization as granted by the IRS, we are now able to do a lot more things like applying for grants and other nonprofit benefits. We are also very grateful for the individual donations we have received since gaining the 501(c)(3) status. Despite the increased administrative work, we are excited about what the future holds.

Glossary/Legend:
Pig butchering - A type of investment fraud where scammers gradually gain a victim's trust before stealing their money. The term comes from the idea of fattening a pig before slaughter.
Ransomware - A type of malware that locks or encrypts a victim's files and demands a ransom payment to unlock and decrypt them. Ransomware can infect a variety of devices, including computers, smartphones, printers, and more.
Phishing - The fraudulent practice of sending emails or other messages purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.
Malware - Software that is specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to a computer system.
QR Codes - or Quick Response code - A two-dimensional barcode that can be scanned by a smartphone camera to access information
VPN, or Virtual Private Network - a service that creates a secure connection between a device and a remote server over the internet. VPNs encrypt data, mask IP addresses, and create a private tunnel to protect user data.
