This shopping season is not only keeping the shoppers busy, the scammers are just as busy, if not busier. Take extra caution as you shop online and practice zero trust.

There are several ways to protect yourself when you’re shopping online. Anything from using virtual credit cards to simply not falling for clicks.

Also, Giving Tuesday is between this edition and the next. The safest way to make your donations is on the official websites. (And make sure the web address is correct.)

Glossary/Legend:

  • Pig butchering - A type of investment fraud where scammers gradually gain a victim's trust before stealing their money. The term comes from the idea of fattening a pig before slaughter.

  • Meta - Facebook

  • PWN - A hacker jargon meaning to conquer or dominate. In the context of online security, pwned often means that your account or system has been breached, and your passwords—user passwords or privileged passwords—have been compromised. The word originated in online gaming forums as a misspelling of “owned.”

  • Search Engine - a program or website that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web. For example, Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Duck Duck Go, etc.

  • Ransomware - A type of malware that locks or encrypts a victim's files and demands a ransom payment to unlock and decrypt them. Ransomware can infect a variety of devices, including computers, smartphones, printers, and more.
