Scams on the rise as profitability dips

Does that mean it’s just getting easier to scam people? Perhaps. But put your emotions aside, flag haste, establish personal identifiers.

The preacher on Sundays always seem to be saying the same thing over and over again. (Maybe there’s a reason for that.) We are also saying it again - check your emotions, check your decisions, check for red flags.

This week hasn’t been much of a whirlwind of a week like we are used to but that could only mean that something in brewing. However, the only way we can avoid what’s brewing is to keep our vigilance up.

Remember, while we have to be vigilant all the time, they only need to be successful once.

Glossary/Legend:

• Social engineering - a psychological attack that uses manipulation and deception to trick people into sharing sensitive information or taking unsafe actions. The goal is to gain the victim's trust and then encourage them to perform actions that could compromise their security.

• Personal Identifier - A phrase, code or situation that correctly identifies the person you are trying to verify.

• Cyber Attackers and Cyber Predators - these terms refer to people who use any kind of technology, including cell phones, to prey on us.

• DRP - Disaster Response Plan. A plan on what to do in times when there is a disaster and you have lost your devices.

• Ransomware - is a set of technologies that allow computers to perform advanced functions. AI combines math, computer science, and cognitive science to mimic human behavior.

• Deepfake - A synthetic media that has been manipulated to replace one person's likeness with another. Deepfakes are created by a special type of machine learning called "deep" learning. They can be videos, photos, or audio recordings that appear real but have been manipulated with AI.
