New Tool For The New Year 2024

Hexagon Center started in June 2023 and we are excited to finally launch another tool to help combat all types of cyber hazards - a weekly cyber security briefing.

We know that with so much going on in IT and cybersecurity, a weekly briefing is probably not enough. We are also working on a portal that you can check in on every day at your own disposal.

Our First Cybersecurity Briefing

Experts recently have been highlighting the increasing threat of ransomware attacks targeting critical infrastructure. These attacks have the potential to disrupt essential services such as energy, transportation, and healthcare, posing significant risks to public safety and national security.

We not only need for organizations to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses,

  • including implementing robust backup systems,

  • conducting regular vulnerability assessments, and

  • educating employees about phishing and other social engineering techniques,

we also need everyone in our communities to be vigilant!

We are in your community to help you with all-things cyber and technology.

Our focus on cybersecurity is to ensure that everyday people, not just people in the corporate world, are safe online.

The internet is quickly becoming a critical infrastructure for all of us. It is crucial that we can use it safely and easily. Hexagon Center is a not-for-profit organization

THIS WEEK’s Pro Tip #1

Beware of Smishing!

Smishing, a blend of "SMS" and "phishing," uses text messages to deceive users into revealing personal information or clicking malicious links. Scammers may impersonate trusted entities like banks, delivery services, or even friends, using urgent language and enticing offers to lure you in.

Phone with Smishing message

How to stay safe from Smishing:

  • Never click on suspicious links in text messages: Even if the sender appears familiar, don't fall for it! Hover over the link (without clicking) to see the actual destination address. If it looks fishy, report the message and delete it.

  • Don't reply to urgent requests for personal information: Legitimate organizations won't demand private details via text. If you have doubts, contact the company directly through a verified phone number or website.

  • Be cautious of unexpected offers: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often entice victims with promises of free gifts, money, or exclusive deals.

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for SMS: This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code sent to your phone in addition to your password for logins.

  • Keep your software updated: Outdated software can contain vulnerabilities exploited by smishing attacks. Regularly update your phone's operating system and apps to patch security holes.

Why this?

Since we are a nonprofit organization, we are created for your benefit only and supported 100% by you and other organizations that believe in us and what we do. Because of that, this section is dedicated to telling you what this edition is about and how we are using the resources we have.

To kickstart an exciting new year, we want to introduce this new tool for everyone to think about as we all wade into the era of even smarter cyber criminals. With the advent of LLM AI, deep fakes will become more rampant and our vigilance has to be even higher than before.

But what if we are lost in this crazy cyber world?

Hexagon Center also helps to inform you about what to look out for and be aware of. Our cyber adversaries are always lurking in the corner. Our mission is to inform and educate.

So if there are any words you don’t understand (because it is a whole different world by itself) or any questions you may have about this newsletter, simply reply to this email (if you’re getting this via email) or email us at:
