From the barrage of cyber attacks to tax season check fraud

There’s been an inordinate amount of cyber attacks lately this year already but because you are an HX Weekly reader and tax deadline is on April 15th (in case you’re not aware of the date), we are again sharing some tips on preventing check fraud.

  1. Sign up for USPS email alerts

  2. Request direct deposits

  3. Pay bills electronically

  4. Track your checks

  5. Reduce outgoing mail theft

  6. Guard against alterations

If you suspect fraud:

  • Contact your financial institution and local law enforcement to file a report.

  • If mail was involved, report it to the United States Postal Inspection Service at uspis.gov/report or call 1-877-876-2455.

Glossary/Legend:

  • Phishing Attack - a type of cyber attack where a malicious actor sends a fake message that appears to come from a trusted source.

  • DRP - Disaster Response Plan. A plan on what to do in times when there is a disaster and you have lost your devices.

  • Ransomware - is a set of technologies that allow computers to perform advanced functions. AI combines math, computer science, and cognitive science to mimic human behavior.

  • Attack - When you see the word “attack” here, it most likely means cyber attacks of all forms.

  • Deepfake - A synthetic media that has been manipulated to replace one person's likeness with another. Deepfakes are created by a special type of machine learning called "deep" learning. They can be videos, photos, or audio recordings that appear real but have been manipulated with AI.
