Because the newsletter is created for everyone, we will remind our readers in every 12th edition of HX Weekly of why we do this.

Hexagon Center is a not-for-profit organization because technology is essential in everyone’s lives. Our work benefits everyone.

It is important to to be apprised of what threat actors are doing and what they are using to prey on us so that we know how we are being targeted. This way, we can better deal with the situations when they confront us.

While knowing is critical to defend ourselves, you also won’t find any super mainstream news in HX Weekly. Like, this: Apple faces years of distractions after DOJ antitrust suit.

Empowering through knowledge

Those proprietary moves made by profit-driven companies are only done to garner trust from consumers. But should we trust them?

They look good when they create panels or tools to help consumers fight disinformation but what happens when they discontinue them?

Cybersecurity analysts will tell you that you are the best cybersecurity tool that you will ever get for your computer and yourself. In order to be an effect tool, you need knowledge to empower it.

📌 Reminder of the Week

Paying threat actors (ransom) only enables them to do more harm

If someone held your computer ransom (sometimes on the pretense that it was infected by a virus), hit the Hexagon Center hotline immediately.

Here are some tips from a recent Charles Schwab email newsletter:

Avoid searching for a site: Use your saved bookmarks for visiting websites, especially financial ones, to avoid the risk of phishing and downloading malware.

Question urgency: Phishing attempts often create a sense of urgency. Take a moment to verify the information through official channels.

Use secure networks: Access financial accounts only through secure networks and consider enabling multi-factor authentication where possible.

Call HEXAGON before acting: If you have concerns about a site or link, it’s always best to call the Hexagon Hotline before taking any action, like downloading software.

Think before you link.
Check before you fact.
